Egg Freezing

Egg Freezing: An Overview

Egg freezing, also known as oocyte cryopreservation, is a process through which a woman can freeze her eggs for a later period. Every month, women release one egg per menstrual cycle, and as they age, the egg quality and quantity decrease. Therefore, egg freezing is done at a younger age so that the quality and eggs can be stored for potential use in the future.

Egg freezing can also help women undergoing any medical treatment like chemotherapy, severe endometriosis, or others that can affect fertility.

Who are the ideal candidates for Egg freezing?

Individuals who are experiencing the following conditions are ideal candidates for egg freezing:
  • Want to delay motherhood.
  • At risk of premature ovarian failure.
  • Undergoing chemotherapy.
  • Family history of early menopause or fertility issues.
  • Limitations of fertility with ageing

Procedure for Egg Freezing

Egg freezing, also known as oocyte cryopreservation, is a multi-step process in which your fertility specialist will perform the following steps:
  • At first, you have to schedule an appointment with your fertility specialist, where you will discuss your queries and reasons for egg freezing. Your specialist also assesses your medical history and reproductive health before initiating the procedure.
  • After the consultation, your ovarian reserve testing will be done to determine the quality and quantity of your eggs.
  • During the procedure of egg freezing, injections are introduced into your body containing hormones that stimulate the ovaries for more egg production. Afterwards, when the follicles reach the appropriate stage, the eggs are retrieved through a minor surgical procedure.
  • Once the unfertilized eggs are retrieved, they are considered ready for the freezing process.
  • For egg freezing, the unfertilised eggs are cooled to a sub-zero temperature, and the doctor also injects a special solution before freezing to prevent the formation of ice crystals as the eggs are full of water.

How are eggs used after the freezing process?

After the eggs are frozen, they are stored in a cryogenic facility at the correct temperature. The eggs are stored in an embryo lab until they are ready to use. When a woman decides to have a child, she can use her preserved eggs. These preserved eggs are thawed and then fertilised with your partner’s sperm in a laboratory.

After fertilisation occurs in the laboratory, the fertilised egg is placed into your body when it reaches the embryonic stage.

If you’re younger at the time of the egg freezing, the chances of getting pregnant from the frozen eggs increase.

Egg freezing is a vital procedure that requires expert care and guidance. It is advisable to choose an experienced IVF fertility clinic in Lucknow to enhance the success and effectiveness of egg freezing and to avoid the associated risks and side effects.
